Combat Robotics League

Project Type

Combat Robotics Program

Date

May 2024

The MakerSpace recently hosted its inaugural Combat Robotics League Competition, made possible through the support of NHRL, Repeat Robotics, and Gannon’s SGA. Daniel Rutkowski, a Senior MakerSpace Technician, successfully secured a $10,000 grant from NHRL to launch Gannon's combat robotics program. This event provided valuable insights that will help the MakerSpace grow and thrive.

Throughout the competition, MakerSpace technicians delved into the intricate process of building functional robots, gaining hands-on experience in design and engineering techniques. Utilizing the MakerSpace’s electronics workbenches, they built custom batteries, incorporated 3D-printed parts, and used a variety of materials to craft robots that combined both aesthetic appeal and destructive capabilities.

The competition was expanded to include students across Gannon University, and the MakerSpace is excited to continue hosting similar events in the future, with plans to engage the broader community.

A key highlight of this initiative was the combat robotics arena, designed and built by Caleb Kelly. Showcasing his welding expertise, Caleb created a versatile arena that can be fully disassembled for easy transportation and setup at different locations. Constructed with durable polycarbonate panels, the arena prioritizes safety while ensuring strength and functionality.
