Popular 3D Printer Speed Test & Comparison | Gannon MakerSpace

At the Gannon University MakerSpace, we constantly test and evaluate our equipment to understand how each machine performs under real production conditions. We compared three of our most popular 3D printers — the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon, the Creality K1, and the Prusa MK4 — to see which one delivers the best combination of speed and quality. The test focused on print time, surface finish, and the influence of advanced features such as input shaping, a technology designed to reduce vibrations and improve print precision at higher speeds.


Each printer was challenged with the same complex model to ensure a fair comparison. The Bambu Lab X1 Carbon quickly stood out for its remarkable speed, completing the print in significantly less time without sacrificing accuracy. This printer is designed with high-speed motion control and intelligent monitoring systems that allow it to maintain consistent quality even under demanding conditions. The result was a clean, precise model with minimal visible layer lines and excellent definition on intricate details.


The Creality K1 also performed impressively. Known for its fast CoreXY motion system and strong balance between cost and performance, the K1 offered competitive print times while maintaining reliable quality. Its smooth layer transitions and solid structure made it a strong contender in this test, especially for projects that need a quick turnaround without compromising stability.


The Prusa MK4 introduced an interesting variable in this experiment, input shaping. This technology helps reduce the vibrations that typically occur when printing at higher speeds, allowing for faster movement without sacrificing print quality. During the test, the MK4 with input shaping enabled showed noticeable improvement, closing the performance gap between traditional printing speeds and high-speed models like the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon. The result was a precise and well-finished print that demonstrated how software optimization can enhance mechanical performance.


The findings from this test demonstrate that print speed is not the only factor to consider when choosing a 3D printer. Material type, part geometry, and desired finish all play critical roles in determining which machine performs best for a given task. At the Gannon University MakerSpace, we use data from these evaluations to ensure that every project is matched with the most efficient and capable printer available.
