The Prusa XL is one of the most exciting additions to the Gannon University MakerSpace. This large-format 3D printer is built for big ideas, with a print area almost three times larger than the Prusa MK3S. It gives us the space and flexibility to print large parts, detailed models, and multi-material projects all in one job. In this post, we will be sharing our first look and early impressions of what makes the Prusa XL such a powerful tool.

The first thing we noticed about the Prusa XL is how solid and well-designed it feels. It’s made to handle long and complex prints with impressive accuracy. One of its best features is the tool changer, which automatically switches between different print heads during a job. This means it can print with multiple colors or materials without stopping, saving time and opening new creative possibilities.

Another important feature is the mesh bed leveling system. This technology checks the surface of the build plate and adjusts automatically to keep the first layer perfectly even. For large prints, this is especially helpful because even small uneven spots can cause problems later in the process. The XL’s smooth, consistent first layer helps ensure that every print comes out clean and precise.

We also tested the power loss recovery function, which proved to be a big advantage. If the power goes out during a long print, the machine can resume exactly where it left off once power returns. This makes it much easier to trust the printer with longer, more demanding jobs that run for many hours.

Setting up the Prusa XL was simple and user-friendly. The interface walks you through each step clearly, from calibration to the first test print. It didn’t take long before we were printing large, detailed parts with strong layers and great surface finish. Even with its size, the XL runs smoothly and quietly, handling complex models with ease.

Our first tests showed that the Prusa XL can produce big prints without losing detail or quality. It’s fast, reliable, and designed for creative flexibility. The combination of its size, tool changer, and smart leveling system makes it perfect for projects that need both precision and scale.

At the Gannon University MakerSpace, the Prusa XL helps us take 3D printing to a new level. It gives us the power to turn large and complex ideas into reality with confidence and accuracy. This machine isn’t just about size, it’s about smart design and dependable performance that helps bring any project to life.
