This year’s Understanding Manufacturing Technologies (UMT) Summer Camps brought students together for an immersive experience in 3D printing, laser cutting, and machining. Hosted at Gannon University’s I-HACK building, the camp gave participants the chance to explore the tools and techniques shaping the future of manufacturing while working side by side with university faculty and industry experts.

Throughout the camps, students moved beyond simply learning about these technologies as they applied them directly through hands-on activities. Campers worked in teams to design, prototype, and test projects of their own, gaining valuable problem solving and collaboration skills. From experimenting with laser cutters to creating prototypes on 3D printers, every step of the process encouraged creativity and innovation. One of the highlights for participants was building their own 3D printer to take home, giving them not just knowledge but also a lasting tool to continue their learning journey.

UMT camps were more than just a series of workshops. It was a chance for students to see how manufacturing technologies connect to real world solutions and to imagine the role they might play in shaping tomorrow’s industries. Our program also emphasized the importance of teamwork, as campers supported one another in turning ideas into tangible designs.

At the MakerSpace, we are committed to providing students with unique and practical experiences. Camps like UMT are designed to give students real world skills while sparking their creativity and confidence. By offering access to industry standard equipment, expert guidance, and a collaborative environment, MakerSpace helps students turn their ideas into real projects and bring innovation to life. UMT Summer Camps are one of the examples of how MakerSpace continues to inspire and strengthen the community!
